2010 ALBANY PORCELAIN ART CAMP

Elephant by Trixie Emery
The Albany Porcelain Art Camp held between the 11th and 14th April at the beautiful Camp Quaranup near Albany, has once again proved to be a very successful event. This year was attended by almost 50 china painters including some 15 first time students from all around Western Australia.Group Photo at Albany Camp

The Tutors at this year's camp were Trixie Emery from Queensland painting African Elephants, Judith Standing from Perth painting Rich Yellow Roses with Cornflowers, Marilyn Barrington from Walpole painting Red Eared Fire-Tail Finches and Brenda Caelli from Ravensthorpe painting Silver Topped Grass Trees.

The students in Trixie Emery's class painted elephants from family groups to imposing bulls, with the large ears proving an unusual subject matter. The pieces were back grounded with a wide variety of techniques ensuring all students' work was quite different.

Marilyn Barrington's students were painting the beautiful little Red Eared Fire-Tail Finches. These beautiful little native finches were brought to life by the students under Marilyn's expert eye, once again utilizing a variety of backgrounds to produce very different outcomes.

Judith Standing's class painteFinches painted by Marilyn Barringtond an array of beautiful yellow roses back grounded with blue cornflowers. The student's work under Judith's expert tuiition, produced some really stunning yellow roses and cornflowers.

Brenda Caelli's class painted a most unusual grass tree found around the Stirling Range National Park. The distinctive silver top of this grass tree looked striking against the blue/purple hues of the Stirling Ranges used in the background. Again the class tackled the subject matter using a variety of techniques and also explored textures produced by the grassboy's seed stems.

The Camp was enjoyed by all present and Fran Martin and the whole Albany Porcelain Art Camp Committee are to be congratulated for producing another very a successful event.

GUILD 2009 CHRISTMAS PARTY AND FAREWELL TO ART & CRAFT HOUSE

Festive tableMembers at Xmas Party

It was a very warm afternoon for the Guild's last meeting at Art and Craft House, in Subiaco which was held on the 5th December. This house has been the venue for Guild Meetings for 45 years but owing to the disbandment of the WA Women's Society of Fine Arts and Crafts, the owners of the premises, the House is to be sold and the Guild has had to relocate to a new home.

Many members braved the heat to join in the festive fun and afternoon tea. The Guild's Patroness, Botanical Artist Philippa Nikulinsky attended and enthraled those present with tales of her latest exploits. Janet Darby, the Secretary of the WAWSFAC was also welcomed. Janet was a President and Vice President of the Guild for several years.

A most pleasant afternoon was spent by all with much chatter and laughter interspersed with several raffle draws. After a sumptious afternoon tea it was time to depart and pull the door closed behind us on 45 years of memories.

The much anticipated 12th Australasian APAT Convention and Exhibition took place between the 14th and 17th of October, 2009 at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle.

The main exhibition hall contained work from artists representing all States of Australia, in addition to work from Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Portugal and Singapore. The standard of work was excellent and was displayed beautifully on round tables adorned with local wildflowers.

Over 30 different teachers participated in the demonstrations over the 3 days of the Convention featuring a wide variety of subject matter. From the more traditional subjects handling exotic flowers such as 'Hydrangeas of Every Colour', to more modern topics such as 'Geometric Texture Work' to the straight out of left field 'Why DID I Buy This?', there were plenty of demonstrations to choose from to suit all persuasions.

The five 'Featured Artists' at the Convention offered a display of exceptional talent.

Filipe Pereira from Portugal demonstrated his skills painting exotic flowers including roses, pansies and poppies in addition to birds. At the demonstration of White Poppies his brush strokes were more akin to magic than painting, as beautiful poppies appeared from the skilful movement of his brushes.

Andreas Knobl from Germany also demonstrated a variety of exotic flowers and birds. He also delighted his audience with a demonstration called 'Miniatures on Eggs', examples of which were a much admired exhibit at the main Exhibition.

The three remaining Featured Artists were all highly respected Western Australian china painters and members of the Guild. Heather Tailor demonstrating her superb skills with lustre and modern technique; Judith Standing using her expertise to paint a range of floral subjects and Barbara Cronin bringing to life a wonderful range of local flora and fauna. For those people lucky enough to attend it was a smorgasbord of inspiration.

The Guild had an information desk at the Convention to promote membership. The acquaintance was made of many enthusiastic painters, several of whom joined the Guild with many more promising to attend a forthcoming meeting. It was very rewarding to meet with so many of our members who were attending the event, especially members from rural areas who we do not see as often as we would like. Many new friendships were made and goodwill was very much in evidence.

Finally, congratulations must go to Betty Schreck, APAT's Convention President, and all her team for hosting such a spectacular event!
