Getting Started

The best way to start china painting is to do a course that supplies all tools and materials. Contact the Guild, your local art school or recreation centre to enquire about courses in china painting.

To continue at home, your basic kit will contain:

  • China paint
  • Medium for mixing paint
  • Palette knife
  • Tile to mix paint on
  • Chinagraph pencil
  • Brushes
  • Wipe out tool
  • Methylated spirit
  • Gum turpentine
  • Lint free cleaning cloths
  • White china to paint

You will also need to have access to a kiln. This is an expensive item; hiring may be your best option at first, and teachers are usually willing to fire work for students. Good second hand kilns are available from time to time.
